So hopefully it'll be ready for us to use soon! I can definitely see it being a great help to us. Yeah, the event was pretty good, its fantastic to come away with something useful at the end of it!
RebeccaRebecca Nielsenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07321961364413484958noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3018115029736777901.post-35834989621596906722012-04-24T21:20:55.387+01:002012-04-24T21:20:55.387+01:00Amazing that a solution can be sorted out so quick...Amazing that a solution can be sorted out so quickly - do you think you'll be able to get the tool built fully and start to use it? If the copyright owner is also the donor, then copy protection is unlikely to be a problem.

5) DV tapes put the "not archival" in "that's not archival"... get the bits onto spinning media asap. The copy should be as good as the original, assuming that original data is still good. The content is encoded in a standard format without much metadata, so it's especially important to keep track of which file came from which tape. Once you've got the data, it is supposed to be better if you don't rewind the tape until needed. When a tape snaps , Reel-to-reel splice-fu can be used to keep going, with some loss for the spliced part. If this happens it might be an idea to do the rest of the acquisition on your least favorite deck.

6) At some someone will bring up MPEG-7.

7) The AVATAR-m project may be of interest: http://www.avatar-m.org.uk/Avatarm/Simon Sperohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15956746824178743667noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3018115029736777901.post-27475623023663361592011-04-20T17:43:39.086+01:002011-04-20T17:43:39.086+01:00We have a few of these disks in the archive of Ste...We have a few of these disks in the archive of Stephen Spender. We ask permission to archive every website we select and we also assess the legal risks involved in archiving it. The tracking database is mainly for the purpose of monitoring who has selected the website as suitable for archiving, the results of the assessment of legal risk and where we have got to with sending out and receiving a permission form. Once we get up and running with using the database I hope to write a blog post about it.

I hope that helps!

EmmaEmma Hancoxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02416752727633569268noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3018115029736777901.post-80090752333990284342011-03-24T14:57:35.330+00:002011-03-24T14:57:35.330+00:00This sounds like a great project. Apparently, it's not cost-effective to print the OED anymore, there's not a market for it. I don't really doubt this.

So that's from a business perspective. But from a preservation perspective, what if I few libraries got together (with a few foundations and funding organizations to fund it), and worked with the OED to print just a handful of 'on-demand' type copies, once every 5 years or so, dead-tree dumps of the online OED, to be held in protected collections for preservation purposes. With costs split between the OED itself, libraries, and foundation funders. The per-copy price is going to be high, which is why there is no purely market-supported print version anymore, but if it's socially important why not fund it anyway?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3018115029736777901.post-71211486173491448082010-09-01T10:46:28.516+01:002010-09-01T10:46:28.516+01:00Hmmm. The longer answer you've already answered pretty much, but to be honest, we didn't consider WordPress as an option.

We could've also used Joomla too and Java-based solutions were also considered - struts for example - which may still be used to underpin some of the front-end stuff.

Drupal's API, in addition to some plug-ins that pretty much directly meet our needs, and that Drupal was already being used by other places (PEI, University of Kent for example), made the (initial) decision pretty simple.

I think you are right about WordPress' user interface being easier, but right now I'm more interested in the API and that I can mould the framework to be act as a CMS for BEAM. I *think*, but I don't know, that this may well be easier with Drupal.

I used WordPress to manage a Web site in a previous role once and while it worked, it always felt like I was shoe-horning a Website into a blog. I guess that is why it didn't feature on our list.

Mind you, I just read that version 7 breaks the old API again and the move (like Ubuntu) is towards non-technical users. Hopefully they'll not forget us developer types!

Petepixelatedpetehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01298274275234137603noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3018115029736777901.post-86729224303695449352010-07-20T22:47:20.212+01:002010-07-20T22:47:20.212+01:00Peter,
